The city of Frankfurt (Oder) once had a medieval city center with many well-preserved town houses from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Frankfurt's old city center was severely damaged by a major fire at the end of April 1945. In January 1947, the city administration decided to level down the entire city center. Large areas of the historic building got demolished and rebuilt with standardized blocks of flats. Only 1% of the historic buildings in the old town area have survived to this day.
A very detailed 3D model of old Frankfurt (Oder) is currently being created by Christoph Neubauer based on old blueprints and photos. The historic city center is thus made accessible for the viewer again. The 3D model is constantly being expanded to make the entire historic city center accessible in film and virtual reality in the future.
